Noteworthy Characteristics

Dense Blazing StarThe Dense Blazing Star, also known as Liatris spicata, has an non-branched central stem which can range in colour from light to purplish green. Its leaves are linear, alternate, and get smaller as they go up the stem. As its name would imply, the Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) produces a densely-packed spike of flower-heads. The flowers have a soft, almost fuzzy appearance, and bloom consecutively from the top to the bottom of the spike.

Garden Uses

The Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) will add a light splash of colour to any garden, and is rather resilient. It prefers moist, sandy loam containing organic matter, but it’s able to grow in soil contaminated with cadmium as well, by turning the toxic heavy material into a non-toxic form in its tissues.

Status: Threatened

The Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) is classified as threatened, meaning it’s not quite endangered, but is likely to become so if steps are not taken. This species also promotes pollinators, meaning that by planting it in your garden, you’ll be making strides in saving not only it, but the population of bees as well – an issue that is of growing urgency.

Interesting Facts

  • Wild fire has actually helped in maintaining the existence of Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) in the prairies! Fire stimulates the growth of hardy prairie flowers while removing trees and shrubs that would otherwise block the plant’s sunlight.
  • Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) has been used in a medicinal capacity by Aboriginal people. They’ve used it to treat colic, muscle pain, digestive issues and heart problems

Planting Dense Blazing Star (Liatris spicata) in your next landscaping or gardening project is something that you can feel good about, since you’ll be helping the plant fight endangerment as well as growing the population of bees. So don’t wait, add this fluffy-looking specimen to your garden today!
